It has been years since the third World War. Armageddon has come and gone. Those humans that are left are ruled over by the Vatican. Most of the time they do their job of protecting the citizens well. Sometimes, however, it requires special care from A.X. Agents like Abel Nightroad, Vaclav Havel, Hugue de Watteau, and many others.
Abel and his true blood vampire friend Kael have an uneasy truce. They work together, though neither one really knows what the other's true objectives are. When Abel is sent on a mission to capture and bring back alive a known vampire, they are all puzzled. Even more puzzling is the order for three agents--three of the best agents. When they arrive on the scene, they find an insane ancient true blood. Taking him back with them proves to be all too easy, which puzzles each of them. Once back, they assume that they will be able to have a few moments of peace to relax, eat, and catch up on paperwork.
They don't know how wrong they are.
Vaclav, who has always been a mystery to some of the other A.X. members has been acting more and more strangely of late. And Caterina seems to know something about it. Indulging his ever-increasingly secretive ways, she gives a tongue lashing to anyone who tries to pry. Things continue this way for months. And then, when a night of murder, mayhem and destruction occurs and there is no sign of who--or what--caused it she makes a startling announcement. There is a new power in town. One they must, at all costs, convince to take their side. Even if it means taking away the being's freedom.
All the while, Vaclav has been missing, and an eerie black shadow has been seen haunting the city. An aura--dark, powerful, yet benevolent can be sensed by those able to feel such things. And Kael seems to know what--who--this creature, this being, is.
